Hurricane remained just one of four undefeated Class AAA teams Friday night, holding off Woodrow Wilson for a 28-20 Mountain State Athletic Conference victory at Flying Eagle Stadium in Beckley.
"Just glad to come away with a 'W,''' said Hurricane coach Willis May. "It's hard to come to Beckley and get a 'W.'' They don't get beat very often at home.
"Our guys just persevered [and] found a way to win. I'm just real proud of our team. They just did a real good job of making plays when they had to. You've got to bring your best game every night.''
Terrell Martin gained 132 yards on 11 carries with a 51-yard touchdown run for Hurricane (5-0), No. 4 in the state playoff ratings. The speedster also added three catches for 116 yards, including a 73-yard scoring reception in the first quarter. Hurricane's Luke Briggs completed 6-of-13 passes for 159 yards with a TD and interception.
The Redskins raced out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead on Cameron Cooper's 66-yard interception return, Martin's 73-yard pitch-and-catch from Briggs and Briggs' 20-yard run.
No. 15 Woodrow Wilson (3-3) cut its halftime deficit to 20-12 on Ryan Stafford's 1-yard run and Stafford's 37-yard TD toss to David Allen in the second quarter.
Martin broke loose in the third period for a 51-yard TD burst and a 2-point conversion pass from Briggs to Andy Higginbotham gave Hurricane some breathing room at 28-12.
Stafford's 8-yard run and 2-point conversion pass to Vashawn Wood sliced the Redskins' advantage to 28-20 with 11:11 left in the game, but the Flying Eagles couldn't break through the Redskins' defense the rest of the way.
"I felt we backed off a little bit and got complacent,'' May said. "The guys picked it up in the second half and I felt we did a better job. The defense did a wonderful job, especially in the second half. We made some big hits.''
Stafford finished with 193 yards on 15-of-26 passes with a score and pick while Allen had five catches for 92 yards and an interception on defense.
"[Our players]] weren't real happy [after beating Woodrow],'' said May. "You've got kids after the game upset with their play.
"They felt like they made stupid mistakes. That's always nice when you have kids that want to improve every week and it bothers them. Hopefully, we can still keep improving because we still have tough games down the road.''
POCA 30, HOOVER 20: Caleb Arthur ran for 275 yards and three touchdowns and the visiting Dots (2-4) made a late goal-line stand to record their second straight victory.
One of Arthur's scores was a 90-yard burst. He was coming off a 431-yard, six-touchdown effort in a 54-42 win over Tolsia.
