The University of Charleston becomes the latest team to try and bring down unbeaten Seton Hill when the teams collide at 1 p.m. today at UC Stadium.
The Griffins (7-0 overall, 4-0 West Virginia Conference) and Golden Eagles (5-2, 4-1) hold the top two spots in the league, with UC owning a half-game edge over a trio of 3-1 schools - West Virginia State, West Liberty and Glenville State.
Seton Hill is coming off an emotional 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten West Virginia State last Saturday. Antwarn Jones' 12-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds to play in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference for the Griffins. Meanwhile, UC scored 14 fourth-quarter points to pull away from Fairmont State in a 21-7 win.
Sophomore quarterback DaRante Hunter continues to be the catalyst for a UC offense that ranks sixth nationally in rushing at 239.9 yards per game. Hunter has rushed for 271 yards and seven TDs and is completing 60 percent of his passes.
As the name implies, the Griffins prefer to attack through the air. Quarterback David Wess leads the WVC in completion percentage (66.5) and is tied for the lead with 13 TD tosses. His top targets, Sammy Tranks and Dorian Scott, rank third and sixth, respectively, in receiving yards per game. Tranks has seven touchdown grabs.
Today's game could well be decided by the defense that is able to step up and slow down the opposing offense. Charleston ranks eighth in the nine-team league in pass defense, surrendering a hair over 205 yards per game, and Seton Hill is ranked eighth against the run (183 yards per game) and has allowed 14 rushing TDs.
The winner of today's game will control its own destiny with regard to the conference title race, but Charleston faces what appears to be a more difficult schedule down the stretch. Following today's contest, the Golden Eagles step out of conference to play host to Lake Erie (Ohio), then finish up with road tests at West Liberty and Glenville. Seton Hill closes out the season with home games against Concord and West Liberty sandwiched around a trip to Fairmont State.
In other WVC games today, West Liberty (4-3, 3-1) visits West Virginia State (5-1, 3-1), Shepherd (3-4, 1-4) plays host to West Virginia Wesleyan (1-6, 1-3), Glenville State (4-3, 3-1) travels to Concord (0-7, 0-5) and Fairmont State (3-4) takes on St. Joseph's (3-3) in Rensselaer, Ind.
Tech visits Bethel
West Virginia University Tech hits the road for a Mid-South Conference clash with Bethel (Tenn.) Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Golden Bears (0-6, 0-4), still in search of their first victory, just missed breaking into the win column last week against Belhaven. The Blazers rallied from 17 points down in the second half to nip Tech 29-27 on a field goal as time expired.
Bethel (2-2, 2-4) is coming off a 42-10 whipping of Pikeville College last Saturday.
