CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Board of Trustees approved grants totaling $307,602 for 31 nonprofit organizations at its March 17 meeting.
The distribution is for arts, culture and education projects in Kanawha, Putnam, Clay, Fayette, Lincoln, and Boone counties.
The Arts, Culture and Education Cycle is the first grant cycle for this year.
Groups that want to apply for a grant during one of the two remaining cycles -- health and human services, and land use and recreation, should visit the Foundation's Web site at www.tgkvf.org.
The Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life and to promote philanthropy in the Kanawha Valley.
The 31 grants approved March 17 will provide funding to the following programs:
Appalachian Children's Chorus, to provide educational resources for the support of a four-day national children's choir festival, The Appalachian Festival of Young Voices, to be held in Charleston: $8,000.
Clay County 4-H Leaders Association, to provide scholarship money for youth registration fees, enabling disadvantage youth in Clay County to participate in a weeklong camp: $2,000.
Pro-Kids Inc., to provide homework assistance, enrichment activities and healthy snacks for an after-school program for at-risk youth living in Charleston: $10,000.
Alban Elementary School, to help to design and start an Early Start Summer Academy to accelerate the reading and writing skills of lower achieving students: $7,500.
Appalachian Community Partners, to support a summer reading program, Energy Express, in Fayette County. Participating students will attend for six weeks and will receive breakfast and lunch: $10,000.
Arts in Action, to support the arts education program Urban Stage, which is designed for underprivileged and at-risk youth: $7,500.
Big Otter Elementary School, to help purchase radios/walkie-talkies for the school, enabling teachers and school personnel quicker response time in case of emergency: $4,300.
The Bob Burdette Center Inc., to provide after school care for at-risk children on Charleston's West Side. Tutoring, mentoring, homework help and nutritious snacks are among items offered for these children: $11,000.
Charleston Ballet Inc., to provide support for the ballet, Pinocchio: $6,000.
Charleston Chamber Music Society Inc., to provide program support for the 2010-2011 season: $3,500.
Charleston Civic Chorus, to allow free admission to a spring and winter concert offered by the Chorus: $2,000.
Charleston West Side Main Street, to provide a grant match to establish an arts initiative to develop guidelines for public art and to commission such art for the West Side: $10,000.
The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia, to support a project called "A Perfect Balance," which includes a sculpture at Guyan Valley Middle School and a multimedia performance at the Clay Center with a distance-learning component: $6,500.
Clay Elementary School, to help with the expansion of the school's walkie-talkie radio program for the safety of children and staff: $3,300.

FestivALL Charleston WV Inc., to enhance the 2010 offerings of FestivALL: $17,000.
Kanawha Institute for Social Research & Action, to provide a program match for Energy Express, a summer program that will serve 40 at-risk youth from kindergarten through sixth grade residing in the Dunbar area: $12,592.
Lincoln County Family Resource Network, to support two weeks of hands-on science experiments and projects for students in grades six through eight at Duvall Elementary/Middle School: $10,000.
Literacy Volunteers of America Inc. in Putnam County, to continue free, confidential tutoring in reading, math and English as a second language to adults 16 and older in Putnam County: $5,000.
New River Youth Symphony and Chorus Inc., to purchase a string acoustic bass, bow and case: $1,000.
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic-WV Unit, to provide project support for the continued training and support to individuals with reading disabilities in high school or college, and provide audio textbooks for those seeking to further their education: $25,000.
River City Youth Ballet Ensemble, to support the 2010-2011 season, which will include The Snow Queen and Around the World: $6,000.
Thanks! Plain and Simple Inc., to support the creation of a Rosie the Riveter Model Community where one region unites to work the Women Ordinance Workers to collect their stories of the World War II era: $8,000.
Vision Shared Inc., to help strengthen the economy and promote improved quality of life in West Virginia: $20,000.
West Virginia Music Hall of Fame Inc., to provide continued support to the traveling museum to visit schools: $17,000.
West Virginia Public Broadcasting Foundation Inc., to help support the two-hour weekly program Mountain Stage: $10,000.
West Virginia University Research & Development Corporation, to provide support to the summer youth arts camp hosted by West Virginia State University through its 4-H Youth Development Extension Service: $14,184.
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, to support the Family Discovery Concert on March 19, 2011: $10,000.
West Virginia Women Work!, to provide for an 11-week skilled trade training class that will enable the placement of women in non-traditional employment arenas: $15,320.
