New climate bill aimed at 'ensuring a future for coal'

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The latest version of a U.S. Senate bill to address global warming will be aimed at "ensuring a future for coal," according to a legislative framework released Thursday by a bipartisan trio of senators.

Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass.; Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn.; and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said they wanted to announce a starting point for their discussions. A final bill isn't expected until spring, and they gave few details so there would be room for further negotiations.

A four-page outline cites recent statements by Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., that coal will remain a major part of the nation's energy mix, but that some form of climate change legislation likely will become law.

"We agree with both statements," the new climate framework document said. "However, due to current regulatory uncertainty, it is increasingly challenging to site new coal facilities, and utilities are switching to other fuel sources."

The document noted that one utility in North Carolina announced earlier this month that it plans to take 11 coal-fired generating units out of service because of carbon dioxide emissions.

"Coal's future as part of the energy mix is inseparable from the passage of comprehensive climate change and energy legislation," the document said. "We will commit significant resources to the rapid development and deployment of clean-coal technology, and dedicated support for early deployment of carbon capture and sequestration."

The senators said they hope to propose a near-term greenhouse emissions reduction "in the range" of 17 percent, equal to that contained in a bill passed earlier this year by the House.

I was reading Yahoo News yesterday morning and they quoted Al Gore saying the polar ice cap would be gone in “five years. “

I read the same piece later in the afternoon and the five years had been changed to “three to seven years.”

I wonder if they got their information from the same polar bear.

“Seems like folks are jumping on the "green" bandwagon without knowing the destination.”

THAT APPEARS TO BE THE CASE.

“If congress spent as much money on renewables as they do on fossil fuels we'd have solar panels on every roof so we wouldn't need any more coal powered generators. The coal industry will survive by developing into another technology that doesn't involve burning it or blowing up mountains to get at it.”

EXACTLY, THEY DON’T WANT SOLAR PANELS ON EVERY ROOF. THEY DON’T WANT FOLKS TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT. CAP & TRADE, CLEAN-COAL TECHNOLOGY, CARBON CAPTURE AND SEQUESTRATION ARE NOTHING BUT A SCAM. THEY MANIPULATE THE SCIENCE, MAKE ABSURD CLAIMS AND SCARE PEOPLE TO DEATH, AND THEN THE POLITICIANS JUMP ON BOARD AND SOMEBODY MAKES A TON OF MONEY BY STEALING OURS LEGALLY. NOT NECESSARY, THE FREE MARKET IS QUITE CAPABLE OF THE TASK AT HAND. IN TIME, FOSSIL FUELS WOULD GO THE WAY OF THE DINOSAUR LIKE THE ANALOG TAPE TECHNOLOGIES OF THEIR DAY. TOO SIMPLE, I GUESS.

No Zingers---are you referring to the liberal Supreme Court? Hmmm...No matter what, giving ultimate power to one agency is a huge mistake. And I agree---we need systems in place before we break the legs of the coal industry. Let's figure out what that is FIRST--then start moving toward cleaner coal, solar panels, wind farms or whatever--and allow these coal companies to adapt accordingly. To just try to hit coal companies in their wallets in a global economy is foolish. They'll simply pack up and move to China or whatever!
