CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Sissonville man was in jail Friday after a 9-year-old boy allegedly foiled his attempt to steal the family car -- with the boy and his three brothers inside.
According to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha Magistrate Court, Stephanie Medford left the engine running on her 2001 Buick to run into a convenience store on Charleston's West Side on Wednesday night. She left 9-year-old Malik Medford and her other three sons inside the car.
According to the complaint, Jonathan Martin, 32, of Sissonville, jumped into the car and tried to speed off. Instead, Malik, who was sitting in the front seat, grabbed the keys from the ignition and whisked them away.
Martin allegedly tried to wrestle the keys away from the boy, and allegedly punched Malik in the face. According to the criminal complaint, Malik fell out of the car, but was able to hang onto the car keys.
Martin then tried to run away across Lee Street West, but tripped and fell. He was caught a short time later.
Malachi Medford, 3, Mathias Medford, 19 months, and Javion Medford, 4 months, were in safety seats in the back seat of the car. They were unharmed.
No charges are expected against Stephanie Medford.
Martin was charged with grand larceny and four counts of kidnapping. He remained in the South Central Regional Jail on Friday.
Bond was set at $250,000 for the grand larceny charge, but Martin was being held without bond on the kidnapping charges.
