CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- People who have been sexually abused by priests or other clergy members in West Virginia now have an outlet to voice their pain and tell their stories, through a new support-group branch.

Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, the oldest and largest self-help support group for clergy-abuse victims, has started a West Virginia chapter, with the hope that local victims of clergy abuse will come forward.

In May of this year, Sandy Martin Cook, 49, was sentenced to 20 to 60 years in prison for sexually abusing Michael "Andy" Lewis, José Strickland and Michael Bradford in the 1990s, when Cook was pastor at Shrewsbury Church of God.

"I want to commend all of the brave victims of the Sandy Cook case," said SNAP Ohio Valley Regional Director Judy Jones. "They started the ball rolling. Hopefully, they'll raise awareness for other victims to speak about their own clergy abuse."

David Mullins was one of four victims who originally came forward to testify against Cook, but his particular charges were dropped and not brought to court. Even so, Mullins said that standing up and giving his testimony against Cook during the sentencing was a sort of closure for the 30-year-old man, who said he was abused when he was in his early teens.

Mullins said that if he hadn't found SNAP, he might not have been able to come forward with his testimony.

"We get a lot of negative comments when we come forward," he said. "Without Judy, I would not have been able to get up there and relive that experience."

Mullins said he hopes the new group will uncover more of Cook's victims.

"I honestly believe there are more victims of Sandy Cook. They need to come forward now," he said. "You're not that same scared 13- or 14-year-old boy anymore."

Jones said the most important thing that victims can do is to come forward and bring more attention to the issue of abuse by authority figures of any religious faith.

I am the mom of a son,Brandon, who was sexually abused by our parish priest in neighboring Maryland,in 2001-2002 when he was a young adolescent. That abuse derailed Brandon's young life. It injured our whole family enormously. Thankfully, Brandon found the strength & courage to tell us, his parents, and report the crimes to the police.
I applaud Mr. Mullins, and the other victims that have come forward to report the crimes, because doing so, will prevent other children from becoming victims. Factual, current, statistics prove that the majority of children don't report their abuse until well into their adult years.
It is vitally important to understand that both civil & criminal accountability, publically names the perpetrators and puts them on record, thus bringing accountability and can therefore keep our children safe from the "avoid/or get out of jail free card" that the predators have been getting for years to perpetuate their horrific crimes on generations of our children

You people are very dimwitted and a bunch of whinners and hate seekers. You can quickly and easily stop the abuse in its tracks. All you have to do is stop and think, "What is more important to me... my chruch/religion or my child?" If you answered "my chruch/religion", then your demons are by your own hands and well deserved. If you answered, "my child", then you have already taken the right step and belong to a church/religion where the leaders do not have access to your children.

Kudos to these courageous people. Confronting the demons and wrongdoers in your life is difficult enough, but calling them out before your family, friends, and fellow community residents is a daunting task. All the laws, legal and common, are stacked against the weakest and most vulnerable in our communities: the children. Predators are protected and immune from responsibility and punishment if they can threaten and intimidate their victims/playthings from complaining or making the violations/crimes known to the larger community and the law by "statute of limitations". These statues are being misused and misinterpreted to protect vile criminals: persons who view children as sexual toys/blowup dolls that won't talk about them. The laws must be changed to make sexual violation of a minor a crime in perpetuity (forever punishable). The view that the perpetrator can cured must give way to the the "best interest of the child" who's life and trust has been ruined and needs restoration.
