Police say woman tried to steal 70 items at Kmart
A St. Albans woman was charged with grand larceny Tuesday after police say she tried to make off with more than $1,500 in merchandise from a St. Albans Kmart store.
Lt. James Agee of the St. Albans Police Department said Katherine VanClief, 31, was caught on surveillance video trying to leave the the store with 12 bags containing at least 70 items. Agee said store security guards called city police about 11 a.m.
Agee said security tags had been cut off the merchandise, which included lingerie, cologne, board games, digital picture frames and women's clothing.
VanClief was taken to Kanawha Magistrate Court, where she was charged with grand larceny and released on a personal recognizance bond.
Child-burning goes to Marshall grand jury
MOUNDSVILLE - A Marshall County grand jury will consider charges against a mother accused of burning the word "wimp'' into her 6-year-old daughter's neck with a cigarette.
Tammy Smith of Moundsville waived her right to a preliminary hearing this week in Marshall County Magistrate Court.
The 43-year-old Smith is charged with six felony counts of child abuse and six felony counts of malicious wounding.
Moundsville police detective Shawn Allman said at an earlier hearing that a medical exam of the girl performed after Smith's Nov. 21 arrest found several other burns.
Smith remains in custody at the Northern Regional Jail on $50,000 bond.
Nitro man arrested after chase on foot
A Nitro man was charged with fleeing from police after trying to run from officers early Wednesday in St. Albans.
St. Albans Police found Vernon Ray Jackson Jr., of Nitro, hiding in a back yard on Abney Street just before 1 a.m., said Lt. James Agee of the St. Albans Police Department.
When discovered, Jackson told officers he was coming out, but instead ran and jumped a fence into a neighboring yard.
Ordered to stop, Jackson instead kept running, crossing the street to another yard, Agee said. He was eventually cornered and arrested. Agee said officers discovered a syringe on Jackson that he later admitted he used to inject OxyContin.
When arrested, Jackson had two outstanding warrants the theft of a digital camera from the police department. In addition to the outstanding warrants, he is now charged with fleeing from police and simple possession of drugs.

Deputies think alcohol factor in Elkview wreck
Two Charleston men were hospitalized late Tuesday after a car wreck near Elkview.
Deputies were called to Elk River Road about 11 p.m. to respond to an accident, where they found 21-year-old Joshua Allen Hutchinson and 21-year-old Justin Matthew Adkins in a wrecked Chevrolet Cavalier, said Lt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. Adkins was unconscious.
Crosier said Hutchinson told deputies he lost control of the Cavalier and slammed into an embankment.
Adkins was taken to CAMC General Hospital. Hutchinson also received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Crosier said deputies believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The investigation continues.
Meth suspected in house fire at Ona
ONA - A suspected methamphetamine lab allegedly caused a house to burn down in Ona around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.
The fire destroyed the house, which was on Bethesda Road, located just off U.S. 60, said Trooper B.A. Ward of the Huntington State Police.
The owner gave police consent to search the house and property once the fire was out and is now being held and questioned about the alleged meth lab, Ward said.
Investigators discovered products used to make meth, including many Sudafed tablets and heat cans, outside of the residence in garbage bags, he said.
Three other people, including someone who may have been staying at the house, are also being questioned in relation to the alleged lab, Ward said.
No one was in the house when the fire started.
Woman shot in arm in West Side altercation
A woman was shot in the arm Wednesday evening following an altercation in Charleston's West Side.
The woman was shot after she and another man began fighting about 7 p.m. at a residence in the 3700 block on Washington St. West.
Another man tried to break up the fight by firing a shot in the air, Charleston police said. A struggle for the gun ensued and several more shots were fired, one of which hit the woman, police said.
The woman was taken to CAMC General her injuries are not life threatening, police said.
One man has been arrested in relation to the shooting, police said.
