Film about Turkish Christian history premieres tonight

Filmmaker Victoria Barrett is taking viewers on a journey from the West Virginia hills to the mountains that cradled Christianity.

In her new film "Journey of Faith," the Hedgesville native traces Christian history from biblical roots through the Byzantine Empire, exploring 15 locations in the Republic of Turkey.

"Journey of Faith" premieres tonight on West Virginia Public Television at about 8:45 p.m. as part of pledge drive events. It will be distributed nationally on PBS next year.

The hour-long documentary visits biblical sites in modern-day Turkey including Mount Ararat, where some believe Noah's Ark came to rest, and Paul's travels from Tarsus to Ephesus.

Barrett, who narrates the film in Turkey, will also explore the early church and the legacy of  Christianity in modern-day Istanbul.

Though Barrett researched the Bible and other historical books for the film, she said that the theological content is explained in a way that anyone can enjoy, from Christians to history buffs.

"I wanted to do it in a way that was accessible and not overly academic, to allow people to come travel on a trip through time," Barrett said.

In addition to film from sites around Turkey, Barrett uses Google Earth features and works of art.

"Journey of Faith" also incorporates a few West Virginia scenes, from the Hedgesville chapel Barrett's grandfather helped found. Barrett originally began working on the film in 2000, but delayed it for other projects.

"I never worried about finishing it. The story is 2,000 years old, and it's not going to change," she said.

Barrett, president of Shenandoah Films, has 20 years of experience in the entertainment industry. She is the director and producer of the documentary film "Desperate Hours," about Turkish diplomacy on behalf of Jews during the Holocaust.
