Economic distress has NOTHING to do with fortune. And, yet, papers such as this one continue to use the phrase "less fortunate" to describe those living in poverty. The real question: Just what factors led to the poverty these "less fortunate" individuals now experience? Could they possibly be responsible for not valuing educational achievement? Could lifestyle choices be to blame? Or did, as this article suggests, they simply and suddenly become devoid of fortune?
While there is nothing wrong with voluntarily helping those in need, true improvement of the problem lies in a far greater degree of personal responsibility, not a predictable donation schedule.
