Ex-Sen. Mike Gravel visiting Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Former Sen. Mike Gravel, D-Alaska, is spending this weekend in Charleston.

Gravel spoke to an informal gathering at the Citizen Action Group office in Charleston, helping promote Jesse Johnson, the Mountain Party candidate for governor in the November election.

Some people will remember Gravel as the key figure in publishing "The Pentagon Papers," a book that included historic revelations about the Vietnam War.

Both Gravel and Johnson said people should become much more involved in day-to-day politics, not leaving all major decisions to a handful of elected politicians.

On Saturday, Gravel attended a book signing and reception at Taylor Books in Charleston.

Today, Gravel will be a guest discussion leader at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at 520 Kanawha Blvd. W., beginning at 9:30 a.m. He has had connections to Unitarians for decades, and he managed to provide the formerly secret Pentagon Papers to the Beacon Press, a small nonprofit publisher associated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. Beacon then published the complete 7,000 pages of those documents.

Gravel has written several books, including: "The Kingmakers: How the Media Threatens Our Security and Our Democracy," published in June; "Citizen Power: A Mandate for Change," published in January; as well as "Citizen Power: A People's Platform," published in 1972.

In 2006, Gravel began running for president of the United States on the Democratic Party ticket. In March, he switched to the Libertarian Party and sought its presidential nomination but failed.

I would have like to have read comments he made concerning Sarah Palin, if any.
