Anniversaries/homecomings

  • Mount Zion Baptist Church 442 McDonald St., South Charleston, will celebrate Pastor Robert K. Davis' 22nd anniversary on Sunday. The Rev. Clyde Burns will speak at the 11 a.m. morning service. Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. The Rev. Alan Hill, pastor of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, and congregation will be guests for the 3 p.m. service.
  • The Lordsmen will sing at a homecoming celebration at 1 p.m. Sunday at Beech Grove Baptist Church, Yawkey.
  • Happy Valley Boys will sing at noon Sunday at homecoming services at Mahone Chapel Methodist Church, Ashford.
  • Miscellaneous

  • St. Paul AME Church will host the 100th Session of the West Virginia Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Thursday through Aug. 24. Opening worship service will be 10 a.m. on Thursday. A welcome program will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for the newly appointed Presiding Prelate and Episcopal Supervisor of the Women's Missionary Society of the Third Episcopal District, Bishop Cornal Garnett Henning and Mrs. Ernestine Henning. A lay witness service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, featuring Martin Luther King Jr. Male Chorus, Tierah Williams, Brenda Camp, Donnie W. Gresby and G.E.S.U.S. Mime Ministry. Revival services begin at 8 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Frederick Wright of Quinn Chapel of Forest Park, Ohio. Hour of Power will be held at noon on Friday. The Wilberforce University Choir will be in concert at 7 p.m. Friday and revival services continue at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Frederick Wright. Young People's Division will sponsor a program at 7 p.m. Aug. 23. The closing program and appointment of pastors will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 24.
  • Winfield United Methodist Church will have an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 at its location, 20 Radwin Drive, behind W.Va. 35 McDonald's, Winfield. Free hot dogs, drinks, Jupiter Jump and games for kids will be featured. For more information, call Kathy Burns at (304) 586-3795.
  • Bethel Baptist Church of Spring Hill will present a special back-to-school program for schoolchildren during the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service at the church, 5028 Kentucky St. There will be games, crafts, songs and stories for youngsters during the Children's Church segment. The Rev. Chuck Rhodes is pastor.  
  • Fifth Avenue Church of God will sponsor a rummage and hot dog sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 on the church parking lot, E Street, South Charleston. Hundreds of LP records, baseball cards and other items will be available. There will not be any clothing. Rent a table for $10. Call 343-0450 for information. In case of rain, the sale will be held in the fellowship hall.
  • Grace Baptist Temple will host a Southern Gospel Extravaganza from noon to 7 p.m. today at the church located on U.S. 60 near Moses Ford in St. Albans. Proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Performers include Girls of Grace, Grace Christian Children's Choir, the Lewis Family, Ladies of Grace, Puppet Ministry by Highland Baptist Church, New Horizons and Kings Harmony. Donations will be accepted in place of an admission fee. Hot dogs, cotton candy, popcorn, sno-cones and soft drinks will also be sold.   • Children's Rainbow Sunday School of Unitarian Universalist Congregation will host a 'Potluck Picnic and Principles' evening from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Children and parents will join together for food, games, worship and activities based on the seven UU Principles that promote respect, kindness, learning, spiritual inquiry, co-operation, social justice and valuing nature. An overview of this year's children's Sunday program curricula for different classes also will be held.   • Abundant Life Ministries, 1534 Washington St. E., will be giving away backpacks and school supplies at noon on Aug. 23 to all students who live on the East End of Charleston.

  • Metropolitan Bible Institute will resume classes on Sept. 17 at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Wednesday Bible Study begins Sept. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. and the topic will be "The History of the Baptist Church."  The "Church History" will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 18 and the cost is $70. Starting Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, "Survey the Old Testament" will be offered for $70. For information, call 342-4766.
  • Freedom Baptist Church will have a Back-to-School Bash! from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 30 at the church, 6602 Roosevelt Ave. Inflatable games, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, games, prizes and back-to-school items will be featured. There is no charge. The church is located off Interstate 77, Exit 95. Turn left onto MacCorkle Avenue East. Go past the Kmart and turn left onto 66th Street.   • Grace Church of the Nazarene, Second Avenue and B Street in South Charleston will celebrate back to school and the final session of community camp from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Free backpacks filled with school supplies will be available for all children, kindergarten through sixth grade. There will be games and refreshments.   • The Master's Garments Clothing Giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Mary Virginia Gospel Tabernacle, Georges Drive, Malden. Free hot dogs will be offered. Call (304) 550-5713 for information.
  • The Clarion Call: A Worship Seminar on the Tabernacle of Moses will be offered 7 p.m. Sept. 5 and Sept. 6 at the Days Inn Conference Center, Flatwoods. The interactive learning-worship seminars feature a walk-through model of the Tabernacle, in-depth teaching, Messianic worship and dance, and intercessory prayer.   • Music

  • A gospel sing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Elk Community Center, Elkview. The Brighterside, Harvest and Royalmen will perform. A concession stand will be open and donations will be accepted at the door for the singers.
  • The Gospel Word Quartet will be singing at 7:30 p.m. today at Atkinson Memorial Church, Frame.
  • The Third Annual Gospel Singin' at the Lake, Sing No. 2 will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Mountain Lake Campground and Amphitheater, Airport Road, Summersville Lake. The sing is presented by REACH By FAITH Ministries and Mountain Lake Campground. Singing will be provided by Gary and Brenda Perrine, The Chosen Ones, Royal Hands, Mercifully Redeemed, The Sonflowers and Mountain Harmony. Admission is free. Seating is available or bring a lawn chair or blanket if you wish. The sing will be held under the pavilion if raining.
  • Frontline will sing at 7 p.m. Sunday at Red Oak Christian Community Church, Red Oak Drive, Nitro.
  • Divine Trinity will sing at the evening service Aug. 24 at Cathedral of Prayer Southern Baptist Church, 2326 Pennsylvania Ave.
  • The Esteps will be guest singers for Monday night service at Lucy Wilson Baptist Church, Elkview.
  • The Brown's Creek Church of God on Brown's Creek Road will be hosting a gospel sing at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 featuring the Redemption Road Quartet from Nashville, Tenn., and the Homeland Quartet.
