Anniversaries

  • Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, 1343 Lewis St., will have its pastor's pre-anniversary service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Lenorris Dixon of Shiloh Baptist Church. For information, call 344-8661.
  • Metropolitan Baptist Church celebrates its 93rd church anniversary at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. Guest minister will be the Rev. Ralph Johnson of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Johnstown, Pa. Former members of the Metropolitan Gospel Chorus and Mass Choir, under the direction of Forrestine McCain-Johnson, will provide music at 6 p.m. Choir rehearsal will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at Metropolitan Church.   • New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 34th church anniversary on Sunday. Speaker for the 11 a.m. worship service will be the Rev. Columbus Perkins of Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Rev. Cornell Byers, former pastor of New Covenant, will speak at 3 p.m. Dinner will be served following the morning service. 
  •   The First Missionary Baptist Church of London will observe its 103rd anniversary/homecoming today and Sunday. The annual picnic will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today. The Sunday morning service will be held at 11 a.m. with Bishop Thomas Murray Jr. as guest preacher. Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Walter Leach and congregation from St. Paul Baptist Temple in Beckley will be guests at the 4 p.m. service. The Rev. Garland Johnson is the pastor. 
  • Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, W.Va. 2, Hurricane, will celebrate its 150th anniversary since it was organized in 1858 and also the 72nd homecoming on Aug. 3. Service will begin at 10 a.m. with a bluegrass gospel group. The morning message will be given by the pastor, the Rev. Don Garrison. Lunch will be held in the fellowship hall. A church history program will be presented with slide shows. Singing will follow.
  • Miscellaneous

  • Little Union Baptist Church will have a community flea market from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 2 at the church, located approximately 7 miles east on W.Va. 41, between Summersville and Craigsville.   • Blue Creek Advent Christian Church will have a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 8 and 9 in the activity building located behind the church. Hot dogs and baked goods will be available.
  • The 2008 Annual West Virginia Charismatic Renewal Conference will be held Aug. 8-10 at Blessed John XXIII Pastor Center, Hodges Road. International speaker, Barbara Shlemon Ryan, RN, will speak. Ryan is a graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Evanston, Ill. She is president of Beloved Ministry and as a Roman Catholic laywoman has been actively involved in evangelism since 1965. She travels nationally and internationally as a retreat director, conference speaker and workshop leader. Ryan has served for several years as an "at large" representative to the Advisory Committee for the National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. She is also the author of five books.
  • Elk River Nazarene Church, 143 Dutch Road in Mink Shoals, will have a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 2 at the church. If you would like to be a seller, call for a free space at 342-6052. Indoor spaces are available for a minimal fee. Goodwill will pick up unwanted items after the sale. 
  • Faith Fellowship will be having a church garage sale and hot dog sale on Aug. 2 at the church, located .2 of a mile off W.Va. 21 on Casdorph Road in Sissonville, rain or shine.
  • The 22nd Greater Kanawha Valley Lectureship will be held Aug. 5-8 at the Washington Street Church of Christ, 601 Washington St., St. Albans. The theme for the lectureship will be "Prophecy and Fulfillment." Speakers will be coming from as far away as Texas and Tennessee.  The April 5 lectures begin at 7 p.m. with registration beginning at 5 p.m., followed by congregational singing at 6:30 p.m. April 6-8, the lectures will begin at 1:30 p.m., with congregational singing prior to the daily lectures. Evening meals will be provided at 5 p.m., Wednesday through Friday. Bring a Bible and a friend. For information, call 727-0761. 
  • The First Annual Outdoor Campmeeting Days is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and 9 on the Maranatha Baptist Church grounds in Sissonville, just off the Tuppers Creek Exit of Interstate 77. There will be old-fashioned gospel preaching, praying, singing and testimonies. Pastor Emeritus Bill Bartlett will preach on Aug. 8 and Jim Edens will be evangelist for Aug. 9. Singers include the Hoy Family, Brighterside Quartet, the Maranatha Men's Quartet and others.
  • Roane County's All-Faith Celebration will be held Friday and Aug. 2 at Spencer Middle School. There is no charge. On Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m., an old-fashioned picnic will be held and bluegrass gospel music will be provided at 8 p.m. by Tracy Greenleaf Miller with Johnny Staats and Roger Bissell. Omega Force, a group of athletes, will perform at 6 p.m. Events on Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., include an old-fashioned bazaar with food, flea market and crafts; live music featuring local church choirs, youth groups and individuals and a concert at 7:15 p.m. by The Bledsoes from North Carolina. Giveaways, games and carnival activities for kids will be featured both days. Displays featuring history and photos of area churches will be available. Bring lawn chairs.   • Wade Chapel United Methodist Church, W.Va. 34, Red House, will have a rummage/food sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Aug. 2 at the church.
  • Best-selling Christian author Beth Moore will deliver a simulcast message, broadcast live via satellite from Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky. 600 churches across the U.S., including Elizabeth Memorial United Methodist Church, are participating as host churches for the Living Proof Live women's event. The broadcast has been made possible through a partnership between LifeWay Women's Events, Church Communication Network (CCN) and Elizabeth Memorial United Methodist Church.   • The BYKOTA's Ministries will have a hot dog and yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Aug. 2 at the Crossroads Community Church parking lot, located .7 of a mile from Sissonville High School on Martins Branch Road. Lots of new and used yard sale items will be featured. Hot dogs, baked goods and soft drinks will be sold on Aug. 2. For information and directions, call 988-9044 or 984-0554.
  • Lighthouse Worship Center, 6001 Sissonville Drive, Sissonville, will have a rummage, hot dog and bake sale on Aug. 9. The rummage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the hot dog/baked goods sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lighthouse Kids will have a lemonade stand. There is lots of children's clothing. The church is located on the corner of Call Road and W.Va. 21.

  • The Believers will be singing at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Meadowbrook Freewill Baptist Church, located on W.Va. 114 North.
  • Bride of Christ Baptist Church will have its Fourth Sunday singing and spaghetti dinner on Sunday. There is no charge. The church service is at 11 a.m.; dinner will be served at noon and singing starts at 1 p.m.
  • The 24th annual Elk Valley area outdoor gospel sing will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Leatherwood Baptist Church, Elk Valley. Primitive Quartet from Candler, N.C., and Mike Upright from Penrose, N.C., will be featured. Bring a lawn chair. Directions from Charleston: Take Interstate 79 to the Elkview Exit, turn left and go 1/2 mile across the iron bridge and go 7 1/2 miles to the church on the right. Elk Valley Christian School will provide a refreshment stand. All proceeds from the concession stand will benefit Elk Valley Christian School.
  • Alta Church of God will have a gospel sing at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Southern Grace will sing.
  • Lucy Wilson Baptist Church in Elkview will have Alan Martin as guest singer at the 7 p.m. Monday evening service.
  • Annual Blue Bell Park Sing will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 and 5 p.m. Aug. 23. Homecoming services will begin at 11 a.m. Aug. 24. Singers on Aug. 22 will be Shannon Wells, Joe Mullins, John and Wilma Kid, Karen Evans and Family, Marie Huddleston and Rosalie, Jim Edens, Greg Treadway, Andy Price, Adam Burdette and Christa, Millie Tate, Gill Messer and Adrian, Zack Keeney and Sheridan Tucci. Singers on Aug. 23 will feature the Baldridge Trio, The Brown Sisters, Eastern Sky Trio, The Jay Humphries Trio, Southern Grace Quartet, The Royalmen Quartet, The Brighterside Quartet, The Laborers Quartet and the Tignor Trio.
