A Mingo County woman won a jury verdict for $861,178 on Wednesday afternoon for health problems resulting from an operation she had at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa, Ky., in December 2001.
Sen. Truman Chafin, D-Mingo, and Letitia Neese Chafin represented Sophia Savage, who lives in Dans Branch, near Williamson, in the medical malpractice suit.
The Lawrence County, Ky., jury awarded damages to Savage for mental and physical suffering from having a surgical sponge left in her abdomen during an operation performed more than six years ago.
The verdict, which came after a three-day trial, included $61,178 for medical expenses related to the flawed operations at Three Rivers Medical Center.
