Riverside High School was briefly put on lockdown Thursday morning when a student alleged to be selling prescription painkillers fled from the principal's office, State Police said.
Troopers were dispatched to the eastern Kanawha County school after faculty notified police of a student being detained by school officials after other students reported he was selling the pills, according to a State Police news release.
Before police arrived, Carl Scott Harvey, 18, of Hansford, was being questioned in the principal's office when he ran out of the room and into one of the school's restrooms, where he tried to flush what were believed to be some of the pills, according to the news release.
Troopers believe a second student, Erica Masker, 18, of Marmet, was also involved in possessing the pills, the news release said. Troopers recovered a small quantity of pills believed to be Adderall or Lortab.
The school remained locked down for about 10 minutes, police said. Both Harvey and Masker were issued citations for simple possession of a controlled substance. The students were then released and sent home from school.
Based on Kanawha County Schools' drug policy, the students could face either expulsion or suspension, police said.
