The State Law Library will present a free "Basic Tax Information" workshop at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the library, Capitol Complex Building 1, Room E-404. The session will focus on basic tax information, earned income credit, tax stimulus package and assistance with free tax filing. The workshop is open to the public and no registration is required. American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Bowles Rice, 600 Quarrier St. The blood drive is open to the public. For information, call (800) GIVE LIFE.
Putnam County Parks and Recreation Commission will offer a Civil War Weekend Friday through Sunday at Valley (Wave Pool) Park, Hurricane. Re-enactors will commemorate the skirmish of Hurricane Bridge and the Battle of Scary Creek. Sutlers, storytelling, night firing, parade drills, ladies' tea, Historical Lantern Tour and Military Ball are among activities. Donations are accepted. Winfield Lions Club members will have their annual Pancake and Sausage Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Winfield High School. The cost is $4 per person for all-you-can-eat. Proceeds will benefit the community projects of Winfield Lions Club.
Muscular Dystrophy Association, Charleston District will hold its third MDA Stride & Ride event on Saturday at the Charleston Town Center. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The low-mileage, non-competitive walk is a festive, parade-like event. For information, call 344-9807.
Beni Kedem Oriental Band will sponsor a Catfish Dinner from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Beni Kedem Shrine Center, 100 Quarrier St. Beverages and hors d'oeuvres will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. The menu includes catfish, baked beans, hush puppies, cole slaw and dessert. Tickets for the all-you-can-eat dinner are $20 per person and are available at the Shrine Center and from Oriental Band members. For information, call 343-9405.
